A selection of the best photographs I took during my past year wandering around New Zealand lands.
The photographs are accompanied by a legend evoking a memory. Here is my selection for the North Island.

A sense of freedom
The Harbor
Wellington – North Island
From the summit of Mount Victoria, I contemplate the center of Wellington stretching under me. The heat of the sun makes the air vibrate in the distance. I want to fly away, free, and dive into the blue waters of the sea.

Sunset’s warmth
Rotorua – North Island
I meet Lydie on the way to Ohinemutu and we arrive a few minutes before sunset. Some Maori houses are still standing with a lovely Wharenui but it’s the Tamatekapua Marae and the Anglican Church St. Faith that attract my attention. With their red roofs and the warm light of the evening, the place is beautiful.

Rotorua’s museum
Rotorua – North Island
I contemplate the beauty of the museum’s architecture. It’s clearly the most beautiful building in the city. Asian tourists interact with “pétanque” players. Selfie stick, palm tree and Elizabethan style archirecture. Strange combo.

The power of mother Earth
Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland
Rotorua – North Island
The center of the Champagne Pool smokes a wee bit and I can feel on my skin the heat emanating from the gas bubbles rising to the surface. Despite the cloudy sky, the colors remain incredible. I can almost hear the voice of the earth!

Volcanic colors
Emerald Lakes
Tongariro National Park – North Island
A gust of wind almost sends me waltzing overboard. On the Tongariro ridge, the wind is so strong that standing up is sometimes difficult. Down below the Emerald Lakes appear intermittently.

Sunset on the coast
Wairarapa area – North Island
The sunlight lying down puts pink tints on the cliffs surrounding the lighthouse. For a moment the flood of tourists is interrupted and I find myself alone on the spot. The moment seems to tremble in the air and I feel that I can touch something important.

Going home
Wairarapa area – North Island
The three small silhouettes walk on the beach leaving their footprints on the golden sand. The laughter of the children resonates in the atmosphere of the end of the day. A smell of dinner is floating in the air.

New Zealand’s hills
Castle Rock
Wairarapa area – North Island
From the top of Castle Rock, I can see the coast extending north and south. As far as the eye can see, undulating hills covered with green meadows. I have the feeling of embracing in a glance what the North Island is.
